Tidewater Arboretum
An Arboretum is a collection of trees, shrubs, and herbaceous plants grown for display, research, and educational purposes. Tidewater Arboretum is a unique oasis in the midst of an urban industrial park. The Arboretum emphasizes plant material suited to the climate of Southeastern Virginia and adjacent areas, and to smaller urban gardens and landscapes. The intent of the Tidewater Arboretum is to give residents and landscapers an appreciation of the many types of plants being propagated by Virginia growers which are available in the nursery trade.
Each plant is identified by Plant Family, Scientific name, and Common Name on a label stake. The year of planting is listed so you can get a feel for how quickly a plant grows and what its mature size and shape will be. If the plant was donated to the Arboretum, the donor's name can be located next to the year of planting. Many of the featured plants display characteristics that vary with the seasons, so visit often!
A listing of the plants in the arboretum is available to download as either a Word file or in Adobe PDF format. You must have the Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your computer to access the PDF file; it is available free from Adobe . A diagram of the plant layout is available here.
