Research and Extension Experiences for Undergraduates (REEU)
The Department of Biological Systems Engineering is now offering a Research and Extension Experiences for Undergraduate (REEU) program; an immersive 9-week experience at the Virginia Seafood AREC.
The program aims to provide undergraduate research experiences in seafood science and technology, specifically:
- Coastal community
- Seafood safety
- Seafood product development
- Next-gen technology
- Modern aquaculture technology
- Seafood economics and business
Throughout the program, students will have the opportunity to receive hands-on training in state-of-the-art facilities, participate in industry field trips, have networking opportunities, professional development workshops, long-term mentorship, and receive industry-relevant certifications (HACCP, GMP).
Stipend Information
Chosen applicants will receive the following during their time in the program. Please note: Due to its location, on-site housing is available but limited at VSAREC.
- $8,000 stipend
- $1,000 travel reimbursement
- $500 insurance reimbursement
- All training materials and certifications

The application process is currently open. The application deadline is March 15th 2025. Admission decisions will be communicated to applicants by late March 2025.
Please note international applicants are not currently eligible for this program. Our department cannot sponsor visas at this time.

Yes, we strongly encourage non-biological systems engineering majors to apply!
We are only accepting applications from sophomores and juniors at this time.
Unfortunately, we are not accepting applications from international students at this time.
All applications are reviewed by the Projects Committee and decisions will be based on the entire application. Applicants will be interviewed in mid to late March by the projects committee with offers being sent in early April.
Yes, at the time the program does not provide laptops to applicants.
If you plan to commute to the VSAREC every day a car is vital, however, if you live onsite a car in not a necessity.
No, unless you feel that they should be aware you are participating in the program.
Accepted applicants will receive specific stipend information before the beginning of the program.
