Fernando H. Gonçalves

Dr. Fernando Gonçalves is a Research Scientist at the Virginia Tech Seafood AREC. He is focused on applied research to address industry needs in the field of economics, modeling economic impacts and contributions for seafood-related topics. His education includes a B.S. in oceanography from Mont Serrat University Center, Brazil, an M.S. in Fisheries and Aquaculture from the Fisheries Institute of Sao Paulo, Brazil, a Doctorate in Aquaculture from the Sao Paulo State University, and a second master's degree in Agricultural and applied economics from Virginia Tech, USA. He also has experience in the assessment of sustainability using quantitative indicators for environmental, social, economic, and institutional (governance) dimensions as part of the skills acquired during his doctoral program. In 2018, he was awarded Top 30 under 30 by the Global Seafood Alliance. From 2009 to 2012, he served as Executive Director of the Agriculture and Fisheries Department in a coastal city in Southeast Brazil, assisting diverse communities, including the indigenous population, fishermen, and farmers, and established recycling co-ops. During this period, he established international collaborations, including partnerships with the Chinese Embassy and establishing sister city pacts and technology transfer agreements for rural development. Adding to his leadership, he has experience as president of a political party engaged in sustainable development and ran as a Vice-Mayor candidate during the 2016 elections in his hometown in Brazil. His experiences in academia and public administration have built his passion for improving the quality of life in communities through applied research and supporting public policies for socio-economic development and environmental conservation.  

Fernando is affiliated with the Center for Coastal Studies and the Center for Advanced Innovation in Agriculture.
